Sink Your Teeth into the New Year-How to Kick Start Your Oral Health

The New Year is a great time to make some resolutions for improving oral health. Even making small changes can help considerably, but as with any resolution, consistency is key.

Improve Your Tooth Brushing and Flossing Habits

Twice daily tooth brushing and once-a-day flossing are essential for oral health, and it can be worth overhauling your routine. Make sure you use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste. While brushing your teeth, place the toothbrush bristles at a 45° angle towards the gumline so they can remove more plaque and food debris from just above and below the gums where it tends to build up. Flossing is essential to remove plaque and food between teeth, where a toothbrush cannot reach. It’s a simple routine that will help prevent gingivitis and tooth decay and ensures your breath remains fresh. Also, replace your toothbrush every three months.

Make Healthier Food and Drink Choices

Your diet is an essential part of achieving oral health resolutions. Choose healthier foods and drinks and especially when snacking. Avoid foods that are high in carbohydrates and sugars, and instead choose tooth-friendly snacks such as fresh fruits and vegetables, and sugar-free dairy products. Cheese is a great choice as it helps to fight bacteria and contains plenty of calcium to strengthen teeth.
