It is possible that quite possible that you have Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). OSA contributes to a whole host of conditions which affect your overall health and quality of life, such as tiredness, concentration, memory, sex drive and heart health.
Medicare can help with sleep studies and we can help to see if you qualify if you have any symptoms of sleep apnoea. Then we work with Sleep physicians, Sleep Technicians, Ear Nose and Throat specialists and GP’s to diagnose OSA and help to improve your quality of life.
There are 2 recognised treatments for OSA aside from surgery where indicated.
- CPAP machines, however these are generally not very well tolerated and are often only worn for a few hours per night.
- Mandibular Advancement Splints.
At Beerwah Dental we have a lot of experience in treating patients with OSA through the use of Mandibular Advancement Splints (MAS) and are a practice that is commonly referred to to help patients with this treatment.
Benefits of oral appliances for sleep apnoea
Advantages of oral appliance therapy for sleep apnoea include:
- Less invasive and quieter than a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine.
- Usually more affordable than CPAP machines.
- Ease of use.
- Ease of maintenance.
- Portability – convenient for travel.
- Alternative to surgery or drugs.
Sleep apnoea symptoms
Sleep apnoea can affect anyone but is more common in men.
Many people do not realise they temporarily stop breathing during sleep, and believe their sleep cycle is normal. It’s often a partner or other family member who notices there’s a problem.
Symptoms of sleep apnoea include:
- Loud snoring
- Gasping for breath during sleep
- Tossing and turning
- Sweating
- Continually feeling tired
- Irritability
- Heartburn
- Waking up with a headache
- Difficulty concentrating
- Poor memory
Sleep apnoea complications
Sleep apnoea can expose the body to multiple stresses and increase the risk of serious issues such as:
