A recent study from the UK showed an increased risk of people who have a history of gum disease, called periodontal disease developing serious illnesses including heart conditions and conditions affecting their mental health.

The study looked at the medical records of nearly 65,000 people who had a history of periodontal disease, comparing them with 250,000 patients with no record of periodontal disease over an average follow-up of approximately three years. Researchers discovered that people who had periodontal disease at the start of the study were more likely to be diagnosed with other health problems, including cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, arthritis and autoimmune diseases, and mental health issues.

The risk of developing an autoimmune disease increased by around a third while developing mental health problems increased by 37%. The risk of developing heart disease increased by 18%. The risk of developing type II diabetes increased by 26%.
